Any help on getting files on my xp pc to play on mplayer, I can see the files in file explorer shared files but clicking on them obviously opens them in the default media player (and I dont want to change the default file association), pressing open in the mplayer gui and clicking on the file produces no results.

iirc there's a button on the mplayer gui which will give you a log output. Otherwise try running mplayer from the command line and see what it says.
