I just got an N810 to replace the N800 so now have GPS and an interest in mapping.

The included map program is OK, but the user interface confuses me. There are plenty of others about but I'm not sure which are useful, and which have maps of Australia available, and if available how to get them.

So any advice?

Try it and see is I guess the best answer. Do you want bitmap mapping, or vector based (e.g. for navigation). I'd give maemo-mapper a try and look at both the Google maps and OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. If there's enough OSM data then either Navit or Roadmap should work for you (both are still pretty buggy in my experience, but at least you'll have some map data to play with as both use OSM).

Maemo Mapper is an excellent map program with good built-in help and plenty of online tutorials, that interfaces to a number of online map repositories.

I use Google Street as my map repository and the Australian coverage is excellent for city and towns and usually very good for rural areas. I've noticed some missing or limited information for remote rural areas, but nothing problematic.

I have also tested OpenStreet as a source for Maemo Mapper, and it is also good and improving all the time.
