I read several of the posts on cloning the OS, but what I am really looking for is a way to make a "snapshot" of everything in the Flash, etc to use as a backup.

I doubt a simple cp -a of / will accomplish this.

Any apps, solutions?

Depends on what you are backing up and what you are backing it up to.

For files:
On my Linux box I just use:
rsync -v root@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/

About as simple as possible

A better way would be get fancy with excludes.

For a GREAT "clone" of the flash:

If you know Linux a bit:Install Tools advanced edition (tarball only no deb will be coming)

Or if you just need the 100% simple solution: Clone OS to SD Deb!! Boot from SD made EASY!!

Just remember to reboot. And thank penguinbait.

rsync just keeps giving me errors when I rsync -v root@n810_ip:/
It askes for user@ip password (I have a user passwd installed for GPE sync to Evo), then lists the directories, but never copies squat.

All I am looking to do is be able to restore my system (including installed applications) should I hose it again (like a true backup). It takes forever to do when I have to re-download everything from the repositories.

Take your pick:
Got a 2G SD ($8.99 from buy.com a few days ago) and clone it every now and then. The cloned OS will have everything you have and do not have to re-dl apps. However, I am not sure how do you 'restore' or clone it back to your tablet. Fanoush, any suggestions? What a joke from bunanson

Buy Acronis, they can 'ghost' imaging your whole system and stored on PC or someplace else. And of course, they can mirror back to your tablet, I believe. They have a 30 days FREE trial, and I tried and got a mirror image to my PC. Very user friendly. I do not have guts to mirror back to my tablet though.

If you use Windows and want to make a backup of your partitions (a real backup, not like the included Nokia backup), I suggest Acronis True Image. (Thanks, dont, for the suggestion.) Version 11 works for this; Version 9 does not; I don't know about Version 10. You can even use it to make a copy of your SD card that has the cloned system.

Ok, say I've cloned to SD. I have everything working fine. Then I change one file that sends me into an infinite reboot loop. The OS can't fully boot because when it gets to this file it crashes. (It's happened before) My question is: could I stick the card into my Windows computer and change that file back to normal?

I started to sound like a used car saleman for Acronis. They seem to have an option to remove a particular file from your zipped image. Presumbly that could help to bring it back to the 'previous healthy bootable configuration'. This is way beyond my brain cells. I think you better go to their website and dl a FREE trial version and see. I dl ed it and play with it for a few days and seemed pretty well behaved. And I also remember some forum member has called them up for questions while using the FREE trial version.

And thats the clincher... restoring. Also its adds a bootmenu, etc that is really uneeded for simple backup clones.

Do a search (with Google) on rsync here, I believe it involves setting up ssh etc. and I could not do it ON the N810, I had to go from my PC to the N810.

Note that there are a number of unix Ghost like clones which might work, the problem is how do you boot off something if your system is hosed.
