forgive me if this has already been asked before. i searched and found nothing.

im trying to setup irreco to use the telnet backend so i can control mpd on my linux box. telnet works on the desktop but it requires a password to be able to connect.

as far as i can tell irreco does not deal with passwords at all. how do i connect to my machine using telnet?

(yes, the port and ip numbers are all correct)

The easier solution is to install mpc and use the commandline backend.
So once installed you setup the connection details for your mpd server, and then it's just a matter of calling "mpc play" "mpc stop" etc. @ the commandline backend.

Sonata and mmpc eats battery tho plus you have to switch application which is suboptimal if you are using the n810 as a fullscreen remote control (with irreco)

Not true. You just need to disable "progressbar" and "statusbar" in

Edit -> Preferences -> Display

Sonata likes to keep talking to mpd, but that has nothing to do with mpc. I only use Sonata to do stuff I haven't implemented yet (playlist management). Although I'm not using it (switching over soon ), the mpd.py module that Sonata calls is solid and it doesn't suck on anything: open - do - close.

I used to use irreco, but it wasn't getting it done. I've rolled my own into one window with pygtk. It's ugly but it does everything I want. If not, I edit a file. You seem like a programmer. If so, it might be time for you to switch. I also noticed you're a slug guy, I use OpenWRT to control different stuff through a Linksys WRTSL54GS, a Linksys WRT54GL and an ASUS WL-500w, so I think I know where you're at. Wouldn't it be nice to slide the volume where ever you want, when ever you want?

I have one Python file controlling everything and it runs on ALL my linux boxes: n800 (dpad happy ), n810 (dpad sad ), kubuntu (kde 3 + 4) and ubuntu. And if it matters, I think hildon-python has been ported to both Mac OS and Windows. "One File To Rule Them All..." Just sayin'. Again.

You got me a bit wrong there. I said mmpc not mpc. MMPC (Maemo Music Player Client), is a mpd client like Sonata. I am aware of the fact that mpc doesn't eat battery


I see you are pretty much doing what I am doing hehe.
I am going to take the roll my own route since irrecos sourcecode is a bit to unflexible todo or change the stuff I want.

How do you set the absolute volume on your denon receiver ? Atm I can only send out +/- Infrared Volume Commands - are you controlling it with lirc or something else ? I am using a denon too btw.

I assume this is the server backend you are talking about?

I gota look into writing my own client for the n810. But at the moment I am finishing a firefox toolbar extension for controlling all the stuff when I am on my pc or eeepc. Should be done by tomorrow tho.
