I want to buy a MID but i dunno if i should wait or not. I saw the nokia N810 and thought that this would be awsome to have, but i can't tell whether i would be remorseful buying one now because better ones will come out in a few months. Can anyone offer their opinion on what i should do? I preferribly want one before June. Will better ones be out by then? Is this Tegra thing something to look into? Or should i just go ahead and get the Nokia. By the way I want the MID to be under $300, so the N810 for $260 on amazon looks appealing. Suggestions? Thank you.

Hi Azakko, I bought my N810 about a month ago. I knew that most of the "old" folks here was anxiously waiting for the N900 (whatever the name will be). At the end of the day the following features made me buy it: Price, GPS, Ebook-Reader and Wlan.
Price: I got mine for 250 EUR. The successor might start at 400 - 500 EUR. For me this is to much for a "lifestyle" product.
GPS: I want to be able to do some geocaching w/o spending to much on equipment and so on. The N810 offers good solutions (maemo mapper + gpxview) and I have no problems with the long (as complaint by others) fixing time.
Ebook: 4.3'' are quite acceptable and fbreader (txt and tons of other formats) and evince (pdf) are doing a very good job =b
Wlan: Nice to have the ability to easily connect to the world wide web.

Still, if you are planning to write documents based on MS office applications (.ppt, .doc) other devices might be more to your needs. But as I wrote in the beginning. I am still playing around with my tablet. Hopefully I will be able to install a dual-boot-system in the next days. So with OpenOffice running, the above mentioned issue might be fixed.

Yours,
icke

If you go for an N810, I think $260 is too much these days; you can probably get one for around $220, as buy.com has had them for $210 shipped twice now. (I think buy.com has them higher now, but there's other places, and barely used ones that were bought for $210 being resold...)

Better ones (next-generation processor, high-def (probably 5MP) camera, HSPA data) will be coming out this year, but maybe not before June, and definitely priced over $300. So while you might still feel remorse, it honestly won't meet the conditions you've stated. (It might be worth the extra cash and wait, or might not.)

For info on the features we can expect in the next model, see this thread; I think prevailing guesswork puts release in the late second to early third quarter, and price $500 to $550, but that's all speculative. IIRC, Nokia did indicate it would be out in the first half of 2009, but somehow deadlines always slide...

And with the addition of HSPA data, there's always the question of frequencies. You will still be able to use it with no cellular data, though, and I think it'll be worth it even without that.

If the successor has HSDPA, it could be interesting for T-Mobile, Vodafone, etc. to sell with an (expensive) data plan, and a device price of maybe 1 EUR. You can already buy netbooks with an expensive data plan for 1 EUR.

Azakko,
if your deadline is June keep an eye out for the Viliv S5 which is slated to be available in March.

Here is some info and several hands on videos to whet your appetite

I don't think we have info on pricing yet though.

The Viliv is not going to be under $300. Probably no other MID (unsubsidized) will be under $300 by June except the N810. Just be aware that Nokia's next OS will not be available for the N810, and you will be likely be reliant on the current OS or a stripped down version of the new OS that does not contain 3rd party software.

I'm waiting for the n810 to drop a bit more. If it hits $150 prior to, or slightly after the n900 hits the stores, I'll pick up one more for backup.
