hi. i know from the title this topic can get confusing. so i am going to try to explain.

i wanted to know if there was any device or any way for that matter to make an access point or a wifi connection with something that you can plug into the wall.

the reason why i am asking is because now that there is technology to provide internet access in some automobiles i wanted to know if there was a way to have instant wifi access

or have an instant wifi connection.

any information concerning this topic would be helpful.

im sure that alot of people would love the concept of just pluggin a device to an outlet and having an access point..

if there is anything similar like this out there please someone let me know

thank u in advance

Are you talking about pocket/portable WiFi routers?

Not only have they been around for quite some time, but the topic has been heavily discussed on this forum as well. Note that, unless you have some kind of ethernet-over-AC network, most of the time you'll need two outlets: a wall socket and an ethernet port.

You can couple a wireless router with a WiMAX modem.

Okay. Lessee... Ethernet is where you get the Interwebs tubes at home. It comes through special cables, like telephone cables but not really so. It also makes all your computers in your home know about each other.

An ethernet port is a socket in your wall, your computer or your Interwebs box where you plug that telephone-mimicking cable in.

Ethernet over AC is where someone thought: "Hey! we've already got plenty cables in the house for getting the electricks. Why don't we plug the Interwebs tubes into those cables, so we don't need those not-exactly-telephone cables anymore?" This works -- kinda -- but is very finicky and the stuff you need to use the electricks cables tends to be more expensive than the almost-telephone cables ethernet. This is also why WiFi is so popular.

WARNING: The explanation above focuses more on humour than on actual information. I strongly suggest to consult a more knowledgeable source, like someone in the street, or Wikipedia (use "power line communication" as search terms).

WARNING 2: Don't plug the electricks cables in your modem--sorry: Interwebs box and in your pc. It voids your warranty.

Question: Do you even have a wireless router at home?

Jacexx, the most likely short answer to your question is simply "no". If you do not already have access to the internet, you probably cannot get access by simply plugging a device into a power outlet. There may be some exceptions to that rule, depending on where you are.

If you want to understand the terms people use in talking about these issues, you may find it helpful to do some background research. This appears to be a reasonably informative source:

What about a little HSDPA box with a wifi antenna? Plug it directly to the wall and you are online! I can't believe someone did not invent that alredy.

What a great idea I've just come up with!
