is there any way to make opera use the direction pad to move around a page instead of hopping from link to link?

You must use an extended press; constant, not quick, pressure. Practice, it works. Personally, I think there should a Pref setting to choose the pad's behavior (one of *many* Prefs not offered -- OS 2007, Nokia?).

Yes, but that question has been asked -- and answered! -- many times on this forum already.

Because I'm a nice guy:
1) get a decent file manager and editor (if you get Midnight Commander, you'll have both in one package)
2) go to the file: /home/user/.opera/input.ini (note the dots!)
3) look for the entry [Browser Widget]; you'll find several entries there: the first four represent the short clicks on the D-pad, the next four the long clicks; if you enter e.g. "Scroll right" next to "right =", the D-pad's behaviour will change. Personally, I've changed all entries, both the short and long ones, to scrolling: it was just too much hassle. (I'm very sorry, but I can't even remember the original entries in that fil, it's been that long)

I'm really pleased to be able to say that I don't know anything about how vi works (ducks for cover), but I'd be surprized if you couldn't open the file I mentioned in it. No root privileges are necessary.

But really, Midnight Commander is one nifty piece of kit. It's on the Maemo software site.

vi is a little complicated i'll admit.. but once you know how to use it, it's incredibly powerful, although some of that power is lost on a device without a keyboard...

Exactly. An incredibly powerful editor is not what I want on the 770; an incredibly easy one on the other hand...

Previous entries are 'Navigate up/down/left/right'. The change should be to 'Scroll ...' as appropriate. I think! Just going to check the changes have worked.

I find the easiest editor is just using WinSCP
