All my mp3's have embedded album images, but for some reason they never show up when I play the music.

go into settings in the canola main screen and then navigate into the coverarts. there you can select update coverarts. select embeded ID3 tags and it will update all images using embeded coverarts.

I gave up on Canola because of album art bugs. I use MediaBox now. The interface is not as much eye candy but it handles the album art better in my experience.

I found a workaround to the cover arts problems - the trick is to not run canola cleanup - so

(a) Go to application catalog and disable extras-devel
(b) Install canola2 beta 11
(c) Install canola tuning plugin
(d) startup canola, set up your audio folders, and generate the cover arts
(e) shutdown canola
(f) uninstall canola tuning plugin and canola2
(g) Now enable extras-devel
(h) install canola2 2.0.0
(i) Start canola

You should still have your cover arts

just found out that the tuning controls will show up if the flickr plugin is installed as well
