My information may be outdated, but the Facebook plugin for Pidgin does not work properly on my desktop (Ubuntu, Intrepid and Jaunty) either, so I suspect it's an upstream issue.

I have a (completely unfounded) suspicion that Facebook and the creators of the plugin are playing a cat-and-mouse game, with Facebook repeatedly plugging the holes that the plugin exploits.
