Hello,
I recently bought a 770, and I'm disapointed by the way images
are rendered on its screen.
Attached are two pictures, the first one is as it look like on a PC
the second (that I obtained with gimp by reducing the numbers of
colors to 256) is how the same image appears on the Nokia.

It seems strange for a 16bit display...

Did someone had the same result ?
And worse,... do I have to return it to Nokia ?

Thanks....

The thing with 16 bit is that when you use 16 bit on pretty uncolorfull images, like the one you had linked to, it doesn't really work too well. 16 bit images have only 32 shades for each color, whereas 24 bit images have 256. That's a world of difference in quality.

In your images you mainly have gray and beige with different shades. It's a tough one to reproduce on 16 bit.

Now, of course that's not how it needs to look like. With a little effort, Nokia (or someone else) could opt to use some form of dithering to achieve much better result. You can try testing the 256 color image using dithering. It will produce much better result.

Hi konttori, thank's a lot for replying,

I understand the difference in quality, and I assume from you answer that both
images look the same when viewed on your Nokia.

In fact I have the same kind of display with all the movies I play on the Nokia, including
the 'Discovery' sample.

But when I went to see the Canola demo on youtube, at one point they play the 'Discovery' sample and there it appears without any problem.

That's why I started to investigate and found that I was able to reproduce the way
images look on my Nokia by converting the image to 8bits with gimp.

By the way, I used your MovieConverter (event with the optimize color option) and had the same results, i.e. movies that looks very bad, with larges stripes of the same color.

Is that really the same with your Nokia ?

When I looked at the images on my 770, the pc image looked great, the other image looked grainy around the center, like rings instead of smooth like the pc image. If those images look the same on your 770, somethings wrong !!

hope that helps

Yes, that helps...
it confirms that there's something wrong, probably with my hardware because
if I take a screenshot with the cpu-applet and bring it back to my PC it looks good.

Now I'm contacting Nokia for that...

Thank's a lot.
