ok, this is probably the dumbest question ever and i'll have to delete my profile here after this, but i simply don't get it:

the canola install instructions refer to scirocco or mistral distributions. now - which is which? which do i have? i thought i'd have mistral because all other distributions say 'mistral', i read somewhere that scirocco is not intended for use on the 770 anyway, only for development, etc. - but then, why do they refer to scirocco in the instructions as if it were the default? is scirocco really IT 2006-39.14 which i upgraded to recently? and if it is: why do even the default nokia repositories that were included with the latest update refer to a mistral distribution?

i know i'll break everything if i touch this. can somebody please get me out of this maze?! :-)

I used the URLs provided for the repositories but kept mistral as it is in all the other ones I use. Installed without problems. Dunno what Scirocco is (except as a Mediterranean wind like Mistral :-).

http://maemo.org/maemowiki/CodeNames

Mistral is the codename of the version of Maemo (v2.0) on which the first 2006 OS release was based.

Scirocco is the codename of the version of Maemo (v2.1) on which the most recent 2006 OS release was based.

Makes sense. I was too lazy to flash the latest 2006 update and redo all my apps and customization, so mistral it is for me.

OK, I'm getting more and more confused now.

I did upgrade to IT 2006-39.14, so according to aflegg I should chose scirocco.

There are two things that make me wonder, though:

On the maemo-developers mailing-list, I read about scirocco (quote shortened):
> Just to be safe... Is this maemo release intended for the scratchbox
> environment only, or is it safe to use scirocco repositories directly on
> the 770? (if you are willing to upgrade)

Officially, maemo releases are intended to be used inside scratchbox.
However, we tried to make it, at least, not crash the device if some one "accidentally" has scirocco repo on device's sources.list.
see this archived mail

I read this as "If you're a normal user, not a developer, don't use scirocco".

The second one is that, as I wrote before, even after the upgrade to IT 2006-39.14 Nokia's own repositories use the "mistral" distribution. (All the others do, too, but it was me who added those, so I can't rely on that.)

First time I find my little friend complicated to deal with.

(@aflegg: It's not that I don't trust you - I hope you see how with these three sources of information conflicting, I must get confused. And above all there's the little child in me who wants to know how his toy works without tearing it apart.)

benny: so, what's your question and maybe I'll try answering it directly? ;-)

Scirocco is the codename of a Maemo release (v2.1). This Maemo release is the basis for IT 2006-39.14. There is a repository, designed for use within Scratchbox (the SDK environment) for Scirocco. As it says, this isn't *designed* for use on the device (it contains many things which are on the device, so could conflict).

Canola uses some Scirocco packages which aren't installed on the device by default. By adding the repo, nothing bad will happen unless you tried (as root, at the command line) to do certain operations like `apt-get install somecorepackageorother'.

HTH,

Andrew

aflegg, as I said: it was only that the various infos I found seemed to conflict.

especially the fact that all of my existing repositories use "mistral" was a clear indication for me that mistral is what I have and mistral is what I should use for canola, even though I updated to IT 2006-39.14.

Your last post makes sense to me now somehow. Thank you!

My pleasure. I note that someone's tried to clarify the installation instructions to the ApplicationCatalog2006 wiki page.
