Hi there i have a big problem. I connected my n900 to my laptop (xp proffesional) in USB mode. i copied a map to the .sound dir but something went wrong. And now i cant remove the map/file anymore. because it shows in the filemanager but not when i press the delete function. deleting it with from the pc will result in error message that the file is corrupted and cannot be deleted.

I did a chkdsk and this gave 245 faulty files. when i press to fix them it all stays the same.

As of that occurens my CPU of the phones keeps running o 100% draining the battery in only hours. is there a way to force delete the file?

Thanks in advance John

1. Have you rebooted the phone?
2. If so, on reboot, does it give an indication that it's running chkdsk? Or did you run it manually from the terminal as root (sudo gainroot)?
3. run the top command from the terminal and see what process is using the CPU. Use the kill -9 [process ID (taken from the top output)] command to terminate that process (ex., in the terminal, as root: kill -9 34434)
4. in the .sound directory, issue the ls -la command to see all files and their attributes/ownership. You may have to delete the file as root if it's ownership is set to root (or something erroneous).
5. what firmware version are you running?
6. Please use a more informative title for postings (like, "N900 Can't delete file")

Post any other info/observations, and/or the output of any of the above commands.

You'll need to give a little more information:

1. What exactly did you copy (file type)?
2. Where did you copy it to (folder/directory on the phone)?
3. How did you copy it (using the file manager or via software on your desktop computer)?
4. Why do you say the file is read-only?
5. Please describe exactly what happens when you try to take a picture (I assume you mean using the camera, rather than taking a screenshot, etc.)

If you can take screen shots and post them (on flikr or whatever), then post links here, that would be helpful.

Yeah, I know how frustrating it can be. You need to think of this device more like a full computer with a tiny screen than a phone.

thanks for the reply cowb0y. here is what i did.

when i just got it out of the box. i connected it via usb mode on my xp machine. i dragged some music files (mp3) in the .sounds map. without using a program just in windows. for some reason in the middle of this operation the connection failed. so the files that i copied were corrupted on my N900. this resulted in a fail when trying to delete the files. on my xp and also vista machine i got the message. cannot delete files because they are corrupted. on my N900 i could not delete the files because it was some kind of a strange file with a ? symbol. when i choose delete from the options menu the file was not shown. so impossible to delete. i connected my phone back to a vista machine and did a checkdisk from dos and tried to repair the files. this wasnt a good idea. because later on i read that in some cases the phone tries sees the system could be damaged and switches to read only. after this no changes can be made to the memory.

after all this i couldnt even save a photo taken with the phone. i yesterday night reflashed both the device and eMMC and everything works again like a charm. mention the problems one mp3 can make.

i would really love to see a build in format memory command. so that a user can format the eMMC without having to connect it to a computer.

many thanks to this website i finnaly managed to fix the problem

thanks for everything.
