this is not a discussion about lack of video calling or mms. this is about marketed features the n900 is supposed to but either fails completly or fails in compaison to what we are used to with other devices.

not cache emails. you have to view them whilst connecting.. most of use our n900 on trains planes tubes. this function is needed.

no potrait txting . sometimes we are in a rush and need to send a quick txt with one hand

gps software stuck in a time warp. its bad

no work email authentication. i want my work emails . i dont want an exchange.

does it work as a phone- well some are dissapointment- some dont care, but if you ahve a rebooting machine it doesnt unless you do the fix- and if you do the fix this device has inadequate battery power for it to be classed as a workable phone.

i will add that this phone is superb in so many ways, and my gripes can and should be fixed, the hardware is there..

Argh. Is that right? I don't use the email app yet, I have to wait for it being able to download headers only. It MUST be possible to read emails while offline. I, for example, used that feature with my N800 to once handle a problem with my flight, in an airport in the other hemisphere. They could only resolve the issue with a number that was not printed on my flight documents. Fortunately I could whip out my N800 and find the email that I had just received from the travel agency, with that number. I had previously been networked back at the hotel, that's why I had it. Couldn't do that at the airport. Not with the the N900 even - you just don't go data roaming on 3G (ha! as if there was 3G, or even working GPRS in that country) when outside EU (for me).
UPDATE: Apparently this was false alarm - phuh! Ref. zehjotkas's posting below. As I said I don't use the N900 email app yet, it needs to be able to download headers only, when I choose to. When it gets this feature I'll start using it. So I'll change to this missing feature as my biggest gripe with the email app.

Fortunately that's probably something that'll come. And it's not a show-stopper (unlike the gripes with the mail application).

As I've understood it, GPS only really works while online. I never planned to use it, I prefer a proper quality external BT GPS like my Holux. Occasionally (when I accidentally hit the map application) it tries to switch itself on, and it looks like the only way to get out of that is to reboot the device. As far as I'm concerned the GPS is rubbish junk and could have been left out of the device altogether. Do it right (i.e. use a proper chipset, not the silly TI GPS chipsets), or don't do it at all.

The only unresolvable hardware issue I noticed right away is that it's nearly impossible to use the N900 w/keyboard while on the couch..

The only thing that really bothered me was the lack of a "Don't check my email during..." setting. I really don't want to get instant email when I'm sleeping or when I'm on my own time, even if the phone is online or using my main profile.

But all in all, I'm quite satisfied with the initial features.

not true. emails must be downloaded (sure they must^^) but then, they are readable offline...

Overall performance in menus and lists. I can see tearing/jerkiness and panning/scrolling is not smooth. For example scrolling photo thumbnails or sms messages is not nice experience. It should be as smooth as microb/pdfreader panning on pages.

Knowing that there is people who do not see any difference between 25 fps and 50 fps so I do not have high hopes for any updates for making menu navigation any smoother.

GPS and maps is huge dissapointement. As I said earlier it´s about extras testing quality when compared google maps mobile or even comparing to nokia maps 3.

And people praising email have to use some kind of drug what I also want :P

Camera/video quality is also not what i expected.

On the another hand there is small things that i really like. Multitasking beign of course the nicest one, but yeah overall picture of N900 is work in progress and maby they shouldn't have advertised as they advertised :|

Generally I enjoy using N900, but these missing features I'd like to see fixed in future fw releases:
Major things:

• no search in email app, pain to find specific email
• no search in calendar
• Calendar view does not limit viewing hours (like working hours only)
• Maps does not support storing own locations
• Maps search required internet connection

Nice to have:

• "smart" birthday should understand age (and display it)
• Sync email/contacts/calendar with Thunderbird/Lightning
• Maps is slow to launch
• "SweetDreams" style time-based profiles, like turn of BT and ring tones during night time.
• Search content from PDF's docs etc.

Ovi Maps is terrible. I think even the maps application on the n800 and n810 was better.

no native msn messenger support (icq, yahoo, gg would be nice too)
ovi maps features are poor at best.

On POP3 and IMAP Whole Message comes down on my device so maybe a setting on the server
