And now my N 900 is DEAD - I've tried everything - plugging in the usb cable to the linux machine without the battery - then putting the battery back in -- and the phone is D.E.A.D... Do i need to send this back to Nokia???

What caused it to brick in the first place? Installing an app, different firmware?

This is still extremely vague...

So, having battery in and the USB to Socket charger connected, does the yellow LED light of the N900 pulsate?
If you press the power button of the N900 once or twice for 7 seconds, does something happen?

Ave you tried to plug the normal charger ? Maybe the battery is totally empty. I don't think that your device can die so easily.

You can try to leave the device unplugged without battery for some hours, then put the battery again and plug it to the normal charger.
