there is an addon in the developer repository called 'shortcutd' which gives you flexibility similar to what you are looking for.

If you install "shortcutd" you can use the camera button, or proximity sensor, short press or long press, your choice...

N900 lacks answer/green button for direct access to phone and also we have a separated button for lock/unlock so it is useful if anybody can do a little job and make an application for double pressing of power button to access phone..
that make use of N900 easier cause one of the most important things on device is calling
anybody can?
