Hi Everybody,

my e-mail app is not starting anymore. I'm not wondering about that because in fact the program is not located where it's supposed to be on the n900 filesystem. I might have unintentionally moved it.
I have a .modest directory on my memory card now.

I already tried to update (overwrite) my existing firmware which enabled me to freshly configure my e-mail account settings, but after that I still wasn't able to start the application, so obviously that didn't lead to a reinstall.

Is there a way to manually install the mail application or "system apps" in general?

Could this problem automatically be solved by the next regular firmware update?

thx for your help!
regards

My understanding is that flashing the firmware does not fix the core applications.

The only thing I can think of is doing a full flash of the eMMC and rootfs.

You'll want to thoroughly read up on that before attempting it.

Try doing another search (if you haven't already) of the forums for similar problems. I've seen quite a few of these questions, but I can't seem to recall where (or what the answer was, for that matter).

I once had a very similar problem on my N810. The way to cure it was to remove modest's cache. That .modest folder you noticed is not the program itself, but modest's local data store.
Try to move/rename that folder or just delete it, if you don't have any valueable data inside.

Good luck!

Thank you for your replies,

I already did a lot of research about the application, scanned bug reports.
There are many posts about it, mainly about modest can't handle too big googlemail mail boxes or the IMAP problem, but none of the is actually telling about reinstalling the application or even the maemo basics.

Simply deleting the .modest folder wouldn't help, in fact the reflash produced a new .modest folder on my memory card.
Also I didn't move the .modest folder (if I moved it at all) as a root. So normally the actual program must be where it used to be. Am I thinking correctly?

If this is a matter concerning only the .modest folder (which contains the mail folders and not the actutal program) can anybody tell me where to move this folder back to? Is that location accessible via connection (mass storage) with a laptop?

I'd be glad if I could avoind the full reflash.

cheers...

Alright guys, I finally succeeded, with help from the chat.
Apparently the was something wrong with the file structure. A very nice guy from the modest support team told me how to move the .modest folder into the .modest-old folder via xterm.

thank you though for your help.
so long...

Glad to hear it.

Seems like Nokia support for Maemo isn't useless at all.
