Can anyone tell me if the N900 can be used to connect my latptop to the internet via USB cable and the Nokia PC Suite?

I current use the E71 to do this, and it is very easy. I just plug in the E71 to my laptop, and the E71 asks if I wan to connect PC to web.

I understand that PC suite works with N900, so hopefully this feature is there also.

Thanks in advance

According to these specifications, the N900 has "capability to serve as data modem via USB connection".

Eiffel

Cheers, but the question was more aimed at integration with nokia PC Suit, which makes USB Data Modem access a 1 click affair

Current version of PC Suite doesn't support the N900, so I couldn't tried it.

However, I did try to connect the PC to the N900 via Bluetooth to access the internet, but once the N900 has been paired with the PC, it says there are no services on N900 which could be used for internet connection. So, I'm not sure.

It could be that I have an earlier version of the firmware.

How do you do that? Do you think the N95 is capable of doing this as well? Let me know what I need to do this. Also, is the internet connection comparatively fast?

I personally hope that pc suite is not needed as it is too much hassle, and then also has to be installed on each computer you want to tether to.

Currently I use my iPhone to tether, if it's plugged in to the computer via USB, all I need to do is then activate tethering through the phone and just like magic the computer sees the available Internet connection and just connects. No messing around with any pc suite software required

Hi X61, the N95 also does this, as I have one of those as well.
As long as you have pc suit on your er.... PC (its now called OVI Suit) then it should just work. This does make the assumption that you have a data plan with your network provider of course.

Hi Dan, one of the nice things with PC Suit (Now called OVI suit) is that it shows you on your PC the amount of data that is going up an down. As I use OVI Suit to backup and sync my phone, its not a real problem.

I will go and try and do the same on a machine without PC Suit, as i'm sure it works without as well.

maemoguy, what happens on the N900 when you plug your N900 into the PC WITHOUT PC suit. Does it come up with menu options like the symbian devices and allow you to choose between Mass storage, pc suit, connect to web etc?

Hey mikec,

yeah an answer there would be excellent. If the tethering does work without the need for ovi suite then I'm pretty sure we could still monitor data usage, either through what's already on the device, or maybe even a neat little widget
