Do you have a SIM card inserted?
Please describe your steps, and the exact behaviour (Do you get a popup to connect? How long do you wait? Where are you located? In a building, outside?)

yeah i think it's a well known bug of OVI map. Andre when will this map bug be fixed? I currently have to use an alternative way (location-test app) to get a locked on the satellites then switch to Ovi Map after.

To answer his question above!
Try install Location-test app from the Extra-testing. It will help make your GPS connected to your map.

edit:
i just emailed him and gave him the app.

You can also just turn on location on the connectivity for telpathy in the status bar and then open OVI mapps. Does the same thing and keeps the GPS running long enough to get a lock.

it's not always the case though, sometimes it take a long time to get a lock even with connection. This is really bad. The PR1.1 is faster than PR1.1.1 in getting GPS lock with connection. It took like 15mins on PR1.1.1 but on PR1.1 it get a lock in less than 25seconds. I don't know why though.
