Ok, I did a lot of searching on the forum and found a couple posts that somehow related to this problem but they were mostly tied to gemail and other email applications.
Here is my problem (and to outrule any kind of misunderstanding, this is the same procedure/setting I have been using on my E65 for 3 years and it worked great).
I am accessing my email (not gmail, but my own domain account, provider is 1and1) from my laptop as pop via outlook. I have my N900 set to imap (yes I heard people saying you should not mix it up, but that's bull since it been working like a charm on my E65). Now if I delete a message on the phone, it will still show up in outlook. If I use the webmail client from my provided to check, I will see that the messages are all striked out, but not deleted. They will all show up in outlook!!! Any suggestions.

I know that on my E65 it did the same unless I pressed manually disconnet in the email client. There is no such option on the N900 and the "send and receive" won't do the trick.

BTW. I have a similar problem with my job email. It's pop and it won't delete either.

Thanks

P.S. I love the phone, but some of these general features are really worse than on my 3 year old E65 (which I am tempted to go back to for everyday life - just for the battery life)

Look for an option called "Delete from..." and choose delete from phone and server. If that's not available then I don't know if N900 supports the feature. There's a difference between Nokias E/N series and it's not just about the name. Also, why not use the webmail client?

The "delete from..." is not available on the N900 (at least not for imap). Why not use the webmail client?!?! This is more a corporate style client. Yes you can access your email, but it's not ment for this. really slow. Besides I would have to log on and check my mails. I have my email on the N900 set as to check constantly (when connected), so I get my mails right away. Having to log on every 15-30 minutes would be a lot of work and wasted time.
I know I should not do this, but I am trying to use the N900 for my work. And yes, though the N900 is the new flagship, I guess I am regretfully experiencing the difference in between the N and E series. N=flashy and impressive even for iPhone users ,-). E=reliable workhorse for professionals. Man, I used to work for Nokia like about 10 years ago, I knew about the stuff before it hit the market and there have been so many nice cutting edge developments that were actually working to at least 75% on release of a new phone...Guess those days are over.....

I think this is intended. I.e. it does not delete the messages until you disconnect just in case you want to undo the delete?

Just a thought. delete works with imap gmail AFAIK.

Edit: Re your Job's email, POP does not have the option to delete on both client and server at the same time. Only to delete everything from the server as you pull the email, but I am sure you don't want that.

Well, I could not find a 'disconnect' option in the N900 client. Just closing the mail application does not do the trick. Am I missing something?

I know that, and this is actually what I would want in this case. Since we (me and my admin) could not get exchange going on the N900 (what a shame) we created a secondary email that is forwarded from the original (not very elegant, but it works).

I'd like to know this too. I was able to "disconnect" the account by opening up the settings, but that didn't delete the messages on the server.
