I'm posting this in the MeeGo forum, as it's probably too late to get the version numbering policy changed on existing Maemo releases.
I would very much like to see simpler, more human-readable, version numbers for MeeGo OS releases, e.g.:Older Maemo OS version numbers like 2.2009.51-1 or 3.2010.02-8 look messy. These versions are also called PR 1.1 and PR1.1.1, Pr1.1.1 UK Voda Varient etc, but there's no easy way for an end user to know that. It is also not at all obvious that these are different sub-versions of Maemo version 5.0.
- 1.0
- 1.1
- 1.5
- 2.0
- etc.
I very much hope that simpler version numbers are used for MeeGo, and that they are consistently used in marketing materials, update notifications, Settings->About screens and so on.

You have a point but i still believe there is much sense in including the date in firmwares. Try googling "N95 latest firmware", and there will be results that say v11 while we are now in v35. With the dates you can still see if that thing is really new or some years old.

Of course, it would be good for a date to show up on any downloads page, and as a separate field in Settings->About, but I still think the version number itself should be just a simple couple of digits. Think how much easier the forum would be if everyone could easily refer to their version number in a completely understandable way.
Does anyone know how Moblin does their version numbers?

the dates don't tell anything in reality. it is just the date of base build. there could be million bugfixes to build 44 and it could be released tomorrow and it could be really superior to PR1.1.1 released some time ago even PR1.1.1 has base build done in 2010.
