It's a lady. A beeeuuuuuuuuutiful lady..
nappleton take advantage of your 28 days and send this one back for replacement too. It's only on part of the screen, and along with the loose hinges and casing you're better off rid of it. It could be a problem with the back light, dust oxide from the loose case, badly manufactured LCD, a number of things. But it is a problem, it shouldn't be like that.
You might feel embarassed or silly because it's the second time you'd be sending one back, but there's no need to be. It's obviously not right, and you can't be sitting on a 18 month contract paying for dodgey hardware. There's guys on here on their 3rd and 4th handsets. In your case, 3rd lucky old chum.
On the bright side if you get another replacement you have another 28 days, and if it's still rubbish you'll be into the arrival time on Vodafone of handsets like the Nexus One and HTC Desire so you would have a lot more choice and you could get one of those instead next time

I have 2 n900's lol long story, 1 is 2 weeks old with all sorts of rebooting issues, is the replacement and i'm trying to get it up and running..
Just a little query the older one's screen is crisp and bright but the other one the newer one has a yellow tinge to it???
I've checked the brightness of screen and its exactly the same is there anything else on it i should check its just the first one is bright and crisp and when on a white background is white but the newer one when you go onto a white background eg calibration is a yellowish colour to the left hand side of the screen
