Did you check that the network settings are correct? On both: your PC and the N900. Try also checking the route definitions on both devices. I had sometimes the problem on N900 that default route was not set correctly and therefore no connection could be made.

- Are you sure you got the right IP address for the N900? Mine always seems to get a different address each time from my home router & I sometimes end up trying to ssh into the wrong device.

Thanks guys, thought it was n900 problem shoiuld have known better vista had been hibernated and resumed once to often. All better now after the inevitable reboot
