So I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure this out... I figured the N900 community could chime in...

My goal is to use my N900 to browse the web using a Tor client connection which is installed on my server (I know there is a native N900 Tor client, but we'll disregard it for now). My server has Tor software installed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_%28...ity_network%29), which is running locally on the default ports of 8118 and 9050 (using Tor/Privoxy). I am successfully able to browse the web from my server using Tor by setting my local browser's SOCKS connection to 127.0.0.1 (localhost), port 9050. I can make a socket connection to port 9050 locally and everything works as expected.

Next, I want to use the N900 to connect to my server's Tor connection from within the same network (LAN). My server's IP address is 192.168.2.100, and my N900 is 192.168.2.101). I have adjusted the SOCKS setting in the N900 Firefox (using about:config) to point to the server (192.168.2.100) and port 9050, but I have no success accessing the internet. During troubleshooting I tried to use NetCat to connect from the N900 to the server (on the same network), but I am unable to make the connection. I have no host based firewall on my server, nor any hardware firewall between my server and the N900.

However, I am able to reach the other services I am running on my server from the N900 on the local LAN (such as the Apache web server, running on port 80). It seems as if ports 9050 and 8118 appear as "closed" from outside the server machine (from the N900), yet are open when accessed locally from the server machine.

Can anyone help me understand why I cannot seem to use my server's Tor connection to browse the web using the Tor connection from my N900?

Thank you very much for any ideas.

I haven't used Privoxy much, but I would assume that there's an option to change which addresses/ifaces it listens on, as with many other services. Did you double-check that it's not set only to listen on localhost?
My apologies if you've already thought of this, but it was the first thing that came to mind after reading the symptoms.

there is an option to use proxies, right.

but that option doesn't support socks proxies (that sucks) and it isn't supported by all apps on the N900, not even all Nokia apps (that sucks even more!)

cu assetburned
ps. if i'm wrong show me how to set it up the right way.

it looks like the instructions I need are found here:
http://www.privoxy.org/user-manual/c...ACCESS-CONTROL

" You will need to configure your browser(s) to this proxy address and port.

If you already have another service running on port 8118, or if you want to serve requests from other machines (e.g. on your local network) as well, you will need to override the default.

IPv6 addresses containing colons have to be quoted by brackets.

If you leave out the IP address, Privoxy will bind to all IPv4 interfaces (addresses) on your machine and may become reachable from the Internet. In that case, consider using access control lists (ACL's, see below), and/or a firewall.

If you open Privoxy to untrusted users, you will also want to make sure that the following actions are disabled: enable-edit-actions and enable-remote-toggle
Example:"

This may be the answer
