It has worked fine for couple months.

Problem:

Headset indicator will not show and the head set will not work when I put in my headset. Other earphones do work, but I really need the headset.

I did not install/uninstall anything new prior to this problem arising.

Solutions I've Tried:

I "flashed" using nokia software updater.

I "flashed" using maemo wiki (cmd, etc)

PLEASE HELP!

its an issue with the headset. i had mine for a week and managed to get them tangled round the chair as i stood up. they stopped working after that but normal ear phones were fine. i was able to get them swapped for a new pair and have been careful with them since!

Did you try some other headset to cut out headset hardware failure?
Does hal see your headset at all? Try
Code:
lshal | grep headset
to further investigate in X-Terminal.
Note: the sign between the two linux commands is called "pipe" it is not a large 'i' or a 'l' like in litter

I did not try another headset. I typed the code but nothing shows up, it goes back to " ~ $ "

Also my headset works when I plug it into my computer. That's why I thought the headset must be fine. Other headphones work, so the phone hardware must be fine. That's why I flashed.

Thanks for the past and future help.

sorry, couldnt read your private message properly cos of the formatting on the N900. i also tried the headset in a pc and it worked fine. just not in phone. a normal earphones worked in the phone.

the problem is because the nokia headset has four connectors that the phone expects to detect whereas normal earphones just have two (look at the plug to see what i mean) it seems like one of the wires connecting this breaks stopping the N900 from detecting it.

i searched this site and found a few bug reports about this all resolved as it is the hardware, not software.

i was able to go back to carphone warehouse because i hadnt had the phone for long. i did say that it was the first time i had tried them and they tried a new set which worked fine. i dont know how much luck you would have with this as you have had the phone for a while.
