I don't want to stream, using Qik or something like that.

I want to be able to plug my phone in or do it wirelessly and use it as a webcam on skype or msn etc.

I know the old PS2 Eyetoy could be used as a pc webcam using the right drivers, so I'm thinking as it's Maemo, this could be possible?

Yes, its possible, i dont know the correct procedure, but if you install VLC on your N900, you can make it send out a stream from your camera, and you could then use a program to pick up the stream via WiFi and then emulate a webcam.

i suggest to use the charger to maintain power.

Yes, you can do this. See this post:

Actually it's very funny to have a streaming wireless video recording device with you, when in range of WLan

PS: VLC will accept the stream if you create a new file on your desktop called "stream.txt", fill it with:

Code:
v=0
m=video 5434 RTP/AVP 96
c=IN IP4 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
a=rtpmap:96 H264/90000
Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of your N900.
Rename the file to "stream.sdp" and open it with VLC.
