The device was purchased on 1-May-2010, the launching date of N900 in Hong Kong.

I flashed the latest firmware (http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php) as soon as the battery was full, and ***BOOM***, the device cannot recognize the sim card. It was effectively bricked.

It seems that the sim requires IMEI unlocking for this region. Since I couldn't find a quick way to unlock the phone (N900 is still too new for http://unlock.nokiafree.org/) , I've to take it back to the shop for replacement.

The firmware version as shown in the About is 10.2010.12-9, which cannot be found in http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php. Anyone know if it's PR1.1 or PR1.2?

i flashed with the wrong firmware and the sim wouldnt work, cant you flash it with NSU, it should give you the correct firmware for your device

probably, it's because downgrade from pr1.2 bricks phone. try next time this - http://talk.maemo.org/search.php?do=process (try now to search about leaked pr1.2 and downgrade)
also you can call the store you bought it and explaine the situation - i re-flashed phone but as Nokia doesn't provide new PR1.2 you can't get your phone to work as phone

NSU will not allow to downgrade and will not report anything else other than your mobile has the latest supported software.
In order to get the phone working again you will have to flash with the leaked firmware..... ooops that will cause a stir me thinks lol.

lol thanks for all the tips.

I'm not sure if I'd want to refresh it again in the near future, as it seems to be that latest one I could get. Just to report the case anyway. ^^

Thanks for reporting to this forum though because your the first i believe thats actually bought an N900 from China, i am at a loss to the simm problem as i dont know the firmware you have and the differences between your fw and the leaked fw but i know the simm issue seems up to know been cleared on the leaked fw... hmmmm strange.

If HK N900 users are disabling their phones by accidentally flashing the "latest" firmware like the OP did, wouldn't Nokia have to release 1.2 sooner? I hope so...

I'm not sure if Hong Kong is lucky enough to be chosen as the first launch district in China, but the discussion of N900 has begun in China since last year (ref. http://bbs.maemochina.net/thread-htm...0-page-16.html)

According to ZogG the sim locking might be caused by firmware downgrade. Actually I'm not sure if 10.2010.12-9 is the PR1.2, which I'd really like to know.

The only thing I can confirm is that flashing it with the 'stock' firmware downloaded from http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php will brick the phone. Those who bought the stock N900 in Hong Kong must really take caution of it, and following ZogG's advise to read the related posts carefully.

And that is why PR1.2 hasn't been released. If you take the risk to live on (or beyond) the bleeding edge, this is what can happen.
I'm annoyed at the delay, but more than happy to wait for a proper release.
