a while back I remember reading somewhere that we could flash the phone by placing the firmware within the phone and then running the onboard flash utility from the X-Term to flash it.
  1. Is this true? Can it really be done?
  2. If it is indeed possible, how do we do it? I mean what are the commands for it?
  3. As usual, this would also have to be run as root, no?

An "onboard flash utility"? Any links/URLs that this exists?

Sounds too me like cutting off the branch you're sitting on.

maybe just confusion between "firmware flashing" and "kernel flashing" (via on-board kernel flasher)?

well... executing the utility gets to just the "Suitable device not found, waiting" stage. that's about it.

Maybe if there's a proper multibooter and the root fs exists on zfs.

flasher, it was added in PR1.1 I think.

Code:
softupd -vv -s --local
Then

Code:
flasher --local <issue command you want>
# sync to save
kernel flashing is supported, not sure about the rest (R&D mode can't be enabled too)

only results in Update Failed.

Edit:
I was trying to flash the CMT. Can't update the CMT from the external Flasher. I always end up with Programming CMT Failed!
