I have a N900 & trying to do the 1.2 update. When I do this on the device, it prompts me to do the update using the PC desktop, & that I cannot do it through the N900?

My girlfriend also has a N900 and she had the update pushed to her phone?

The problem is, we both have macs & I have no access to a windows box to use the PC Desktop to try & run the update?

Any help here? Thanks :-)

theres several threads on this problem, basically your problem is lack of rootfs space, usually from installing -devel apps, possibly your gf never went that route. my advice, befriend the "power search" in the top right corner, try introducing yourself with a 'free rootfs' search!

Thanks

I bought the device used, so that is part of my problem maybe? I did a search, not a linux guy, so a lot of it makes no sense to me.

So if I find a PC & use the desktop to upgrade the device, will it fix this issue? Or am I going to have to dig into the system on my N900? :-P

Actually, if it suggests using NSU, the problem is usually a package conflict. This tends to be caused by 3D games - openarena, quake3, tuxrace are common ones. If you have these installed, uninstall them temporarily and retry the update.

Thanks, it did have those 3D games, I am uninstalling them now ;-)

I am very tech savy adult here, just this is new, it does not take me long typically. I have been looking at this phone for a while, my girlfriends needed a phone & jumped on it. I was trying to be patient, but just got one used. I have been a T-mobile sidekick user for 8 years! But I have other linux handhelds.... just liked simple phones ;-)

Nope... No good, deleted all the 3D games. Still tells me I need the PC and use Nokias PC software update? The question is, will the PC software update fix what ever is not allowing me to do the over the air update? Or has some damage been done to the system? The phone runs fine, just want the update?

search for the rootfs threads. you'll learn how much free rootfs space you need for an over the air update and how much you actually have. as well as how to free more up.

he pc upgrade doesn't require so much free rootfs space so it may work, however there were issues with nokia software updater on the pc not working pre-pr1.2 so they never worked for me, and i haven't tried since.

I am really confused by the roofs threads, sorry to be such a NooB. I deleted games, turned off download catalogs. I searched a bunch of rootfs threads... Ill keep looking. I should have probably purchased a new N900. Thanks everyone

heres the wiki for freeing up rootfs: http://wiki.maemo.org/Free_up_rootfs_space

dont be disheartened it can be confusing at first but you'll pick it up.
if you're worried about what the previous user has done to it you may want to consider doing a full flash and restore the operating system to factory standard. okay that also sounds daunting but there are step by step guides on here that will get you through it.

oh and just in case i'm flogging a dead donkey (although from what i've seen 95% of people with this error have low rootfs) do the check on how much@u have free and how much you need, theres always the chance you're in the 5% who need another solution altogether.
