"maemo 4.0 Chinook is the next stable release in our plans after the recently released maemo 3.2 Bora. Even if this is a major release bringing deep changes and enhancements, it is fully supported by the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet hardware. It is also confirmed that Diablo, the next release after Chinook, will be also supported by the Nokia N800"

This I think is great news it looks like Nokia saw the 770 os2007 support fiasco and knew it would be best to avoid it. As much as people complain IMHO Nokia is doing a great job learning from mistakes.

As usual from Nokia, good and bad news in the same go: Nice that the N800 will not be dropped the way the 770 was, but -- Hurrah! -- Yet Another API Break! (Y.A.A.B.)

Gentlemen, reach for your compilers...

Yeah, there's another API break, but this is completely understandable and necessary when you realize how old GTK on the N800 is and that it will make porting newer applications so much simpler.

Nokia have also seen to make sure that there is an availability of the Maemo 4 alpha SDK right now so developers aren't caught off guard.

It was sort o' confirmed here by Quim Gil last week if you were following the "advocate" thread... >>> http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...7911#post57911

- Aapo Makela couldn't answer on 2007-03-30 in which release was his fix applied. Last month we announced maemo 4.0 Chinook and the following releases Diablo and Elephanta. You can ask back in your bug report and the developer should be able to tell you in which relase the fix is implemented.
I was mostly concearned that Diablo (where the fun starts) would break away from the N800...

Followed the first link and didn't find this. What's the big deal with these? New features/abilities? Is there a site somewhere addressing this? Also, any ideas on a timeline?

http://maemo.org/intro/roadmap.html

Gives the general gist of things. Not too sure about the timeline.

For example, the new Internet Communication Suite and the Mozilla-based browser are the first signs of Chinook (AIUI).

Similarly, under-the-covers, Gtk will be upgraded to a newer version, allowing for better eye candy in the UI.
