You have to download and install this thru the N900 App Manager:

Not sure if wmv and dat will work. But avi will.

I had installed it, and yes, it plays avi, but not all the formats.
Is there a program like vlc for n900? or how can I download extra packages for player like ubuntu?

too bad you can't play .smil files (whatever they are) so my wife could watch macedonian tv via www.my-home-tv.com. she was even going to buy the n900 if it could so my daughter could learn the language. I guess the media player does not have the capabilites of mplayer on ubuntu or realplayer on windows

Install "mplayer" and "sib".

mplayer is a player backend and sib is the GUI for mplayer.
I haven't come across any avi video files that I couldn't play yet.

I have. mkv (h264/ac3) It can play mkv files no issues as long as it isn't too cpu intensive and is not HD resolution. (Maemo5 has a video card driver limitation where it doesn't allow videos with higher resolution than the 864X648)

I have also tried playing 720p mkv file after booting into Nitdroid on my N900 and it plays it at around 5-8fps while overclocked to 1GHz. (this is all CPU decoding using Rockplayer) If we can somehow utilize the DSP, it will most likely be watchable. But seems we may never see this happening anytime soon.
