OK, so you came from symbian OS.
Every answer to every your question is in user manual of the N900.
Anyway, go to menu-app manager- tap into middle top place of the display, it will appear new menu - tab on refresh(or something like this). Then you will see many directories with programs. Chose one and search for the specific program. You can search when open the hardware keyboard and type few letters from the name of the program you are searching.
That`s it!
Hope this help, but my strong advice is - read the manual first, then use your new phone.
PS: congratulations for your new mobile-computer!!!

Do you have Internet on N900? Can you open www.google.com on N900? If yes, then read instructions here:

http://wiki.maemo.org/Downloading_apps

If no, say so, and I'll describe another way. I don't have Internet on N900, so it's not difficult for me.

PC suite isn't necessary, either way. But you can get help with PC suite here, too, later, if you describe the problem.

I'm somewhat a newbie, too: no previous Linux experience. So, don't be afraid. Everything is easy.

First of all, do what jorjino said.

If you download these *.install files using the N900's browser it will automatically go through the installation procedure for you.

However as a newbie, you are strongly advised to stick to the app manager for now until you learn more about the N900.

What do you mean: 'slow'? Some programs, like App Manager, are really slow, but it's issue of application.
Having many widgets on the desktop and many applications running can slow the phone somewhat...
But first, what is your firmware version? You can see it in Settings->About product. I have 10.2010.19-1, and it seems to be the latest.

To update firmware, you need to use either PC Suite or command-line flasher. At first, try PC Suite (version 7.1.51.0).

The touch screen... I use stylus mostly, and I get no issues (though I'm afraid I'm scratching it, but official stylus should be made in such a way that it doesn't scratch the screen). Maybe, firmware update would help you.

Shaad

Firstly update your rom to PR 1.2 if its not alreday on the latest version. This will make your device much faster in general.

Secondly install Faster Application Manager from the pre-installed Application Manager. as the name suggests this is much faster than the normal app manager in installing and uninstalling apps from the different repositories.

also from the N900 browser fo to the OVI store (which is preinstalled as an icon) and you will get more apps from there.
