The idea would be to periodicly make backup copies of all the important stuff placing the backups in the big partition, keep like 2 or 3 old copies to be safe, and add an additional step before booting the OS, if an specific key combination is held, or if previous N boot attempts have not completed successfully, display a menu with the backups, with a time out of like 30 seconds if no key is pressed in the menu choosing the most recent backup, and then restore the backup.

The backups would only happen after a sucessfull boot up, so most of the times they should contain a version of the system that can boot.

Obviously effort should be taken to make this compatible with multiboots and other stuff that mess with the boot process.

Hmm, like NT's last known good. Not a bad idea, though I'd vote for menu when keyboard is open. Isn't that what backup menu does, basically?

Backup menu doesn't work for me and some other guys when it comes to restore a rootfs from the n900 itself: it leaves the device in an unbootable state. Works when reflashing the rootfs from another machine, but only after having reflashed once the stock firmware.
Nobody seems to know why.
But I second the OP, I would greatly appreciate a self full backup and restore application.
