I've been reading through the mods for the N900 and I'm a bit of a noob, although i've managed to change notification colours and also add a reboot button!

Alot of the mods involve replacing existing files with the modded files, is there an easy way to browse through the folders and paste over them as you would on a comp? I've tried using Midnight commander but cant seem to get it to find the files im looking for.

Alternatively, is there a way to paste files onto the n900 using the usb camble and a computer? How do i gain access to the root using tha cable?

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere but I havent been able to answer this question with what I could find in searches etc.

I'm a noob too And my N900 is fully modded!
You must use SSH connection. You download SSH Server (in maemo extras, i think) and on your computer you must use WinSCP (look for it on google).
This way, yes you can drag and drop files directly to the N900 and modify files using your computer. It's very easy!

I have another question, I suspec that my work computer is blocking something, I only havea a mac at home, what is the equivelant software for a mac to WinSCP

For viewing and moving files i use cute explorer, for full access launch it in xterm as root (need rootsh installed)

sudo gain-root (enter)
cuteexplorer (enter)

Is there a way that I can gain root acess when usb cable is connected? So I can drag and drop?

i use SSH via WLan to conect to my N900. Dont know much about the USB Networking (Dont need it, never trust USB for something difficult as Networking), someone else will have to help there. I Think USB Networking has to be enabled first to use WinSCP / SSH. This may be a bit tricky.
WinSCP and Putty (putty as remote console)
Read the project pages / howtos for WinSCP and Putty, its nothing specific with the N900.

I Think Mac can use SSH FileTransfer natively. See SSH Manfiles / HowTos.

SSH is really simple to understand (if you stick with Username/Passwd authentification) and has some really noob-friendly documentations.

Use FileZilla http://filezilla-project.org/download.php to connect via SCP to drag/drop.

I found Midnight Commander too hardcore too! I've been downloading files direct to my N900 and copy / pasting / renaming using the FileBox program. It's a full root access file manager for numpties like me. Doesn't need a PC, USB cable, whatever. You'll need to enable root access and also show hidden system files in FileBox to rename/copy/move system files.
