Hello.I want to run Debian programs on my N900.I search it and i found Easy Debian for this, but i did not install it.People say "If you install Easy Debian you can run Open Office and Gimp."
I want to ask, if i install Easy Debian, can i install and run all debian programs (like a computer).

Umm you probably can run some compatible debian applications from desktop but it is not optimised for the N900 and it will be painfully slow to use. You can download the compatible package compile with arm support and it will work. It may be not optified but you can use it like the desktop. N900 can never reach your desktop level in term of power and RAM. So bare in mind that it's running an ARM processor not Intel or AMD. Recompile the code may be needed to make the package install to the right directory.

Yes you can run GiMp and openoffice, firefox and many other one as well. But not everything just some.

Anything that has been cross-compiled for the arm processor will run - just install stuff as normal.

I have Easy Debian installed on my n900 and it breathes new life into the device.
I uninstalled openoffice because I don't have the patience for it and I wanted to free-up disk space. But I installed gimp & inkscape and they are perfectly usable.

I've just installed some programming tools too (build-essential).

It's very handy.

Just try it and see.

I recommend you learn using Debian first, if you are not already familiar.

Nope, Easy Debian can't slow your N900 down, I mean, there is no reason. It's just like a program which runs, when you want it to. You can close it... Also, when I have it open and I'm not doing anything, it uses 3 or 4 percent of my CPU.

And yes, you can run Debian applications if you install it... The ones which are for ARM architecture of course.

Think of Easy Debian as a default set of applications. You can uninstall/install what you like.

It's all installed in a 2gb image file so any changes you make to Easy Debian will not mess up your n900. However, it does share your n900 /home/user folder - e.g. any file you create add in your n900 is visible in Easy Debian too.

LXDE is low-resource window manager/desktop environment. If you want to you can install others (but I would not recommend it and don't uninstall it - it might break stuff )

I haven't had a chance to use the programming stuff in Easy Debian yet.

In theory I should be able to download source code into Easy Debian - compile it and then install it (assuming the source code is arm compatible).
