When I started using the N900 it wrote up to about 10 mb/s. Nowadays it only writes at very low speeds, like 2 mb/s. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to solve this?

Flash memory fragments just like normal storage. The only difference is that a flash chip has the same exact read speed, regardless of fragmentation. However, a flash chip suffers from decreasing write speeds as fragmentation gets worse and worse. (I also hate how the modern flash chips take control of the wear leveling from the OS, and do it themselves, which made trying to use a defragmentation program on a flash chip almost entirely guaranteed to at best not make the situation any better, and typically makes it worse)

So, it's destined to write slowly after a few months of walking on sunshine?

Erasing everything after a backup and restoring afterwards might help?

I would suggest MVing everything to your PC, then back every few months when it gets slow - that should take care of everything.

Have you used any of the various "speedup" scripts that are floating around? My experience has been that some of the tweaks they do help interactive tasks seem more responsive while making things like bulk writes via USB much slower. This shows especially when you're doing things like copying a bunch of mp3's or a movie to the device from a PC.
