I have a few webcams lying around and had a few ideas on how to use them on my N900.

After googling for some info i now understand that webcams require a custom driver for each specific brand/type webcam.

Problem with that is that I have no idea how this works exactly. My Linux skills lack way to much.

One of these webcams is a PS3 eyetoy webcam.
Connected it also on my PC and it's far the best webcam i've used.
Works really well under low light conditions.

Since there are LOTS of these webcams sold, probably many here own one as well or might buy one soon as part of the MOVE package,

I was wondering if someone would be interested in compiling a driver for this.

digged up some info:

It *should* work on almost any distribution, just modify the commands appropriately
Sounds promising, but again I myself have no idea what to do to get even started.

Some might wonder why use a webcam when the N900 has 2 already?
just a few ideas:

- record video when riding motorcylce or other fast vehicles.
I taped my phone to my bike few times, but scares me all the time.
a wired webcam would be more convenient and safer.

- rear bumper cam in my car.
build a webcam in the backside of my car, and use the N900 screen to view live video. handy for the wife when parking

- connect 2 webcams and record 3D video?

- Aerial video recording. (connect phone +webcam to kite or tethered balloon, phone protected in a foam case recording the webcam stream.
Also might be usefull

- Under water recording.(for the real dare devils )

few problems noticed:
- where other webcams use about 128mA, the PS3 cam shows 500mA power reserved on the USB device. Not sure if it also is fully used, but win7 USB shows as reserved compared to 128 for others.

to much to handle without using a powered USB hub. but no real problem for me.

- All camera programs available assume you are using the internal camera's i guess?
Displaying/recording the webcam stream would probably require a custom video recording tool?

Just a few ideas i needed to get rid of.
