I have been able to install very easily easy Debian on n900 pr 1.3,and it runs fine. Thanks to the devs !

I would like to install more apps, but I don't know what password to give.

I tried the maemo one, but it fails.

After fixing this problem, will I be able to obtain a functional CUPS and SANE installation ? Can I install a development environment ?

Use "Debian Chroot" icon, and apt-get (or aptitude). You can also use Synaptic icon... You don't need to give any password... Have you already seen Easy Debian Wiki page?? Everything is there...

I have now read the wiki, and I can now install some apps.

But I am still stuck with a big problem : if I want to apt-get install g++ (I need to compile and use some personal progs), it fails because a problem of gcc version.

apt-get upgrade does not work (and is forbidden in the wiki).

Is there a solution to turn the n900 into a development machine ?

I wish to install aspell on n900, downloaded from<http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/armel/aspell/download>
I do not know if i could install or not aspell.deb
I tried to install from inside easy debian with synaptic, but asking for root privilege...root password(what is the password? I tryed lots nothing worked)

I am very angry with this password linux things...I cannot find anywhere usefull help.

try it by X-Terminal with wifi on
sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install aspell
reboot

it worked for me, trying to find out now how to use it

When you're running in a chroot environment, the chroot environment actually depends on the host environment for various raw devices.

In other words, the commands peter2p said requires your maemo OS to have actual network connectivity through some means.

You can't not have internet access and try to install packages by hand. The packages have dependencies which needs to be fulfilled and not always are the dependencies are easy enough sort out.

Edit: You know you can also easily change the root password on the easydebian image simply by going through Debian chroot instead of Debian LXDE. Running Debian chroot will drop you into that same LXDE environment but only through console and with root priviledge. From there its a simple matter of doing:
and you're able to reset the root password to the password of your choice.
