For all those who are interested in an alternative PIM on the N900, have a look on Kontakt Touch.
Its the KDE PIM (kmail, Koorganizer,...) now ported to Maemo5.

I do not know yet how good it works, but I could install and configure it to sync my IMAP account.

Note:
Please be aware that it is experimental software!
Watch the CPU load!
akonadi-server will use a lot of CPU.
