This seems like a pretty insanely awesome feature, and as i'm currently in the process of completely rebuilding a car (280z), a nicely futuristic thing like this would suit my design perfectly.
I just wanted to know, if the N900 could do this, or if, as a linux phone, there was already an easier and simpler way to do this?
You carry your cpu & storage around, & the display & peripherals are what change in your environment.
Right now, the only thing which is sort of close is running X11VNC on the phone, and then VNC viewer on the tablet in your car, the computer in your house, etc. However, X11VNC is sort of laggy and a little unmanageable if you are typing, etc. I suppose that's the aspect that RealVNC are working on for the terminal mode project (as seen by their logo on the terminal mode video).
Unknown for improvement is the possibility of running NX Server (or a port of open-source NeatX server) on the N900, & then NX client on the car, home computer, etc. I asked the NX folks, but they do not plan to port NX Server to Maemo (although they already have one for Debian Linux). So that leaves for exploration someone porting the open-source NeatX server to Maemo to gauge its effectiveness.
