If you install the simple-brightness-applet you can disable automatic screen lock completely.

1. Open Mobile Maps
2. Click on screen to bring up options
3. Go to Settings
4. Go to Advanced Settings
5. Click on "Next"
6. On the screen that says "Please specify how to handle backlight abd standby during navigation:" select "Always On".
7. Navigate through the rest of the options.
8. Get back to Map.
9. Click on map to bring up options again.
10. Click arrow in bottom right hand side of screen and go "Exit"

Backlight will now remain lit and screen will be active during navigation.
