I guess if you open a terminal, then call alsamixer and press m (mute), sound will be totally mute, but i haven't check it (and i can not do it right now).
(For enabling sound press m another time)

The alarm will sound even if you turn your device off (a feature, not a bug!).
If the solution is to open a terminal, you might be better off with temporarily deactivating your alarms.

Could you not set a silent audio file as the alarm?
If my phone is on the silent profile the alarms within "Clock" still sound - is there any way to ensure the phone is completely silent without having to turn it off?
