This may seem like it would belong on an S60 forum instead of a NIT forum (where are the good Nokia handset forums, anyway?)... but...

Engadget has an article on Dashwire 2.0 today. And it will supposedly soon support S60 phones.

What is it? It's a web client (on their servers) that syncs and integrates things with your phone. So, you can send SMS messages from your web client (presumably your Windows/Linux/Mac PC, but perhaps your Maemo device as well), handle visual voice mail, etc.

This, and a bluetooth headset for the actual call handling, could let you leave your phone in your briefcase/messenger-bag/backpack/etc. while using the NIT to control everything. Dial/answer via (that phone app based on libgnoki), SMS and everything else via Dashwire.

Though, if libgnoki and its associated app were extended so that you can fully remote control an S60 phone, that might be more useful (integrate bluetooth HID and BIP, perhaps?).

Well, HID is, IMHO, a separate project from gnokii, and wouldn't really fit well. Phonelink could be a front end for both, of course.

I think I've seen a reference to a VNC server for S60? If so, then BIP is probably not necessary; not that it's bad, just unlikely to happen if that can be dealt with otherwise.

I didn't say put HID into libgnokii. I also said "and its associated app" (meaning Phonelink, because I can never remember its name). Phonelink is where HID/BIP support would/should go, IMO.

I've seen a VNC _client_ for S60, but not a VNC _server_. But, I don't think that makes BIP un-necessary. BIP is a standard BT profile, and thus might be easier/better to support across more phone platforms, where depending upon a VNC server for S60 means you're limited to support/interacting with S60 phones.

That said... and S60 VNC server would be rather cool. I'd be interested in that if it was out there (have any URLs you know of, or should I start scouring google?). Use my N810's VNC client to remote control an E66 or N78 maybe? Then I wouldn't even need a HID client on the N810. Though, I don't know how I'd specify to VNC to use the phone's IP address via DUN... or would I have to try to tether them via wifi? (joikuspot?)

Nah, no hard info on the VNC server; I just thought I remembered that. Quite possibly I remembered wrong... As I meant to imply, I'd rather see BIP, but didn't think it was likely as (I thought) available software would work for what's probably the biggest use.

I don't have an S60 phone, so I don't know much at all... I was kinda thinking in terms of PAN, if that's supported on S60. Wifi should definitely work, but is harder on the batteries at both ends.

HID, of course, is already available in the form of xkbd-bthid (or some such alphabet soup), but that only works with Linux as opposed to Windows on account of subprotocols understood; I don't know about phones. (I assume you're aware of that project; I too can see where, given BIP, that would be very nice in Phonelink. Right now it's just a cool thing with little use...)

And sorry if it sounded like I was tearing into you; that was not my intent at all. Just thinking about all options and posting what I thought. I didn't really take your comments to even imply that it should go into gnokii; that was just an open possibility that I quickly (and vocally) rejected to myself.

didn't sound like you were tearing in, sorry if I came across that way in reply.

I do know about the xkbd-btwhateverthelongstringofcharacters is... but I haven't tried it since the N800 when it was sort of a replacement for the full screen thumb keyboard. I don't know how/if it works with N810 and the hardware keyboard.

I sort of see that as a different app. I think a HID+BIP application would be for displaying a phone's screen on the NIT, and remotely controlling the phone. the xkbd-thing doesn't really give you the option to see the phone's screen.

And, I also would sort of like to see xkbd-thing turn into "use the N810 keyboard for the bluetooth keyboard, use the N810 touch screen as a bluetooth trackpad". Which definitely doesn't make sense for phone control.

As for PAN ... I don't really consider that to be supported on the NIT (yes, I know about the add-on script, but until it's supported in the NIT control panel wizard, I don't consider it to be actually supported). And, I haven't seen a nokia S60 phone with PAN support, so far.

Would Dashwire only be able to connect a Nokia phone to an NIT, or could it also connect a WM phone to an NIT to allow the NIT to make calls and send and receive sms?

This will be the last step for me to have complete IT control of my phone using Gizmo.

Call ID out (which strangely enough can send ANY number as callID...)
Call Forward from my phone to IT.
And this(Dashwire for S60), will put me with a perfect VOIP control of my current number.

Interesting thought; but with an S60 phone (at least) one could use the Mobile Web Server, and get away with similar functionality whether you use the IT or not - this is my setup and it works quite well.

Mobile web server looks very interesting - can't believe I've missed it before.
