My n900 has been working so good for over a 18 months now that I have not changed, moded, updated or added any software to it. It just does the job and I have no complaints.

However, just recently it has begun to chew up the battery something wicked. I mean a full nights charge and then I get 3hrs use. So I thought the battery was faulty. I purchased a new one (Genuine) and I get about 2 hours more usage than the old battery. But before it chewed up battery my n900 would last all day from 8:00am to midnight without recharging now with the new battery I only get 5hrs max.

So I did a bit of checking, and I noticed that the backlight does not switch off automatically now. I have to manually slide the side slider button. The backlight timer is set for 30 seconds but it does not work. I think the problem is that my phone gets accidentally touched and the backlight comes on and then never goes out until the battery is chewed up.

As I said, I have not changed anything. How can I get the backlight timer to work again?

If you have not added any software to the device, it might be a good idea to backup and reflash your device. Afterall, you won't have much to lose and you may get your backlight timer to work again.

That is by far the most easiest solution you can get.
