Hi folks, and Happy New Year to you all.
I am wondering, as a newbie with the N900 with the new firmware installed.
What I woudl like, as I am a team organiser, I have to send out group texts to about 15/20 people per week, and at the moment it is a pain in the rear to select each one, hoping not to miss anyone out.
Is there anyway groups can be created with the N900 i.e. through software upgrades, or some clever developer?

Thanks for you help.

Hi charlie,
I cant shed any light on thsi issue as i'm a noob to N900 and apps - I had an N95 8Gb before my N900 and never bothered getting into the apps side of things because it wasn't worth it.
I think the N900 is a fantastic device and with a few missing functionalities upgraded with the firmware updates it will morph into a fantastic phone!

But i will agree with you totally on this point as surely setting up a 'group' is a standard feature on 99% of all phones???

There are many functionalities missing on the phone & text side of the phone whcih I am a bit miffed are missing, now i know that its a computer before a pho...yada yada yada ..... But how supremely easy would it be for Nokia to enhance the call and text features with a firmware update if they would only listen??
I mean i sent this bug request after this post http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40218&page=2 as i feel messages and missed calls are a priority feature of the phone but someone from bugzilla doesn't seem to think so as he only replied to bug request with Thanks for reporting this. It is currently not planned to change the behaviour or add another option in the Preferences for this
there are other features which i miss on the phone and text side of things which im sure there are many posts and conversations for them
In example one that really annoys me is:
Call Log : There is a basic call log showing you the time a person called you last - but it refreshes the time the contact last called. I want to know what time my wife called me last, the time before that, and the time before that .... and what time i called her each time i called her.

well i think i've just ranted enough to go and have a cup of tea and use my N900 to check the news, update my facebook status while checking out what my mates are up to, buy some stock in BP, listen to some music, watch a movie .... oh and i might just make a phone call!

grouping of contacts is still not possible but there are maaaaaaaany people wanting this essential feature. maybe a small update will bring this function.
by now i have to say that there isn't a workaround for or app/program with this functionality. :/

Workaround:

Suppose you have a "Cycling" SMS group
Edit all your contacts to have "Cycling" as a nickname
Write an SMS to "Cycling" (actually write the word cycling in the white box)
Press send
Phone shows a list of people with that nickname (it shows their full name)
Just tick all the people it shows

i.e. phone remembers all 15 -20 for you, only way to miss one is not tick it. To send messages to only certain group members, tick only them

To edit contact:
Open Phone
Scroll to contact
Tap into contact
Menubar>Edit
Add Field
Scroll to bottom of field types
Choose nickname
Enter "cycling"

Alternately you can just keep the names/numbers of all the people in your cycling group, in a text file separated by SEMICOLONS
Open the text file, copy the line, paste into the white box of an SMS, and press send

e.g. your line is:
John Smith;Ann Smith;Peter Thorn;Jack King

Paste and send. Phone will only ask for clarification if one person has multiple numbers, or two people have same name
