It's not possible; the only way is to have a valid certificate, or to set skip_ssl_cert_check=1 in ~/.claws-mail/clawsrc

Thanks, that'll work just fine. Much better than turning off ssl all together.

Does anyone know if there is an option anywhere to remember that you accepted an expired ssh certificate? I've looked and looked, and I'm afraid I missed it somewhere.
