Earlier at the construction site in the forehead by steel plate touch, n900 have no hardware equipment can detection range? If there is a software development can from her own head, TouQian, head, objects distance from less than set distance, automatic alarm?? The last time I didn't pay attention to steel, be touched,,,,,,,, this thing similar car reverse infrared sensing, how many meters distance automatic speech broadcast

Think modern intelligent mobile phone should consider these, more safety first, well, and difficulty should not quite, (using infrared?) The key is thought, let's may not take the computer, not DaiShou electricity, do not take navigation, don't even take mosquito-repellent incense,, but we must carry a cell phone, and mobile phone anything is possible,,,,,,, also should consider to smartphone,

I think laser measure would work and be cheap but other than a quick distance measurement I see little uses for it. it simply adds bulk and battery drain to a phone. A standalone one is better I think.

Not sure if computer generated gibberish, google translate catastrophe or a proximity sensor app request. Assuming the last one, might be problematic. Proximity sensor in N900 is buggy and bright light might give false state-change signal. Not to mention it was intended for close range, so would most likely not work as expected. proximityd package would be a good start

I guess the only half-way useful approach would be to use the camera to detect objects and to analyze their relative movement compared to the N900.
In principle it's possible but it's quite tricky, especially if you have no idea in advance what these objects look like and in different lighting situations.
I did something similar when I was a student. But it wasn't that complex, because we at least had a general idea of the objects we were looking for in advance. One of the mayor problems was the CPU power needed to analyze moving images for objects in real time. If there aren't much more efficient algorithms than we used back then even an overclocked N900 will be far from having enough CPU power.

Someone just needs to figure out how to connect a kinect to the n900.

I think I'm willing to work on that.
