Hi maemo forum,

my N900 keeps on muting the earpiece speaker during a 2G/3G voice call.
It works with the build in speakers, as well as with connected external headphones.

i have noticed that in the alsamixer the gain setting for

- Headphone gain = -59.9 dB
- Earphone gain = mute
- Earphone off

i have adjust the settings correctly(0 dB gain), but still no sound on the build in earpiece speaker (i also tried to save the alsa setting with alsactrl store and reboot).

i have the same behaviour with the stock nokia kernel (2.6.28-omap1) and the the 2.6.28-power50 kernel.

any suggestions are highly welcome, since this bug makes the phone pretty unusable.

thx,
p.

Hi,

i have tried to reflash the N900 with the latest image:
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
with no effect!

any suggestions to fix this with software?

Please provide more details: what earpiece? BT? if so how do you connect to it?
If standard speaker/'external headphones' work as they should problem might be with the earpiece you're using.

have you got fm carkit installed? i find if I accidently turn it on, my calls get broadcasted to the radio frequency I set it to and I'm forever wondering why the other person on the other end isn't talking to me :P

Hi,

Thanks for the replies!

The "earpiece"i am talking abount is the build in speaker, in the middle of the left edge of the phone.

with "car kit", do you mean the FM transmitter? i have tried to switch it on and off and it still does not work!

thx

Nope, I mean fm carkit:

So obviously not... what happens when you activate loud speaker? This should go through the side speakers. But are you able to hear the other end?

What happens when you press the mute button? Does it mute/unmute?

Cheers,

I'm having the same problem, and it's kind of intermittent. It is somehow related to the CSSU kernel. At first I thought that the problem was due to some incompatibility with the mafw-eq-renderer-plugin that I installed. I proceeded to reflash the phone with the vanilla (the eMMC) and then with the combined image, and finally the CSSU update. I can give more details, but this is basically an unaffected installation.

The symptoms are that on some calls the earpiece doesn't work, and I cannot listen to the other party unless I switch on the speakers.

well even I have d same prob.. now my front camera has stopped working!! and also tat small light next to the earpiece.. i opened up my device and saw tat the connector cable for the slide has started to cut!! could anyone else confirm tat this could be the reason why the earpiece is not working correctly?? cause once in between for about 2 days my earpiece magically started working and then went silent again!!

I have a similar issue. all earpieces, BT and wired, and speakerphone work fine. The phone's ear speaker goes virtually silent. you hear faint sounds if you listen carefully. I pulled the phone apart and looked at the speaker, made sure everything looked ok. nothing seemed wrong. Today I ran "alsamixer -c o" and kept it in the background and made a call and realized that the speaker actually works, I heard it clearly, but only under those circumstanced. Going to a backed up pre CSSU state didn't help.

This first happened to me after installing dbus-scripts to enable Bluetooth PAN tethering.
