Hello all. I've been lurking for a few weeks now, while playing with a friend's N770 (he bought an iPhone and hasn't touched the 770). I started playing iwth it, and I really like the flexibility it offers, but I find it rather slow, so I plan to buy an N800 this weekend.

Had a few questions though if y'all don't mind.

1) I'm a Mac user. I have access to a PC (work laptop), but I would really rather keep this all on my Mac. Any other Mac users out there? Has there been any limitations us Mac guys have the PC's don't? I was able to flash the 770 with my Mac, and I'm familiar with the Terminal and such, so none of that scares/worries me.

2) My cell phone is a BlackBerry 8800 on Cingular. From what I've seen on here, they don't play nicely. I'm considering picking up a cheap BT phone to swap out to when needed, any suggestions? I figure a RAZR might be just the ticket, but you guys would know better than me. Or better yet, does the BB 8800 work with the N800 now?

3) What are the preferred brands for SD around here? One of the things I really like about the N800 is it uses SD like my two digital cameras. My camera is not SDHC compatible (Nikon d50), so I'm thinking a 4GB for the internal slot, and then a 2GB on the external should be fine (so I can swap with the camera if needed). Also, should I buy the fastest card I can find, or is there a point where the N800 doesn't gain anything from the faster cards?

4) Has anyone released a hard case for the N800? I agree that the soft case is not cool, and I kinda liked the 770's removable hard cover.

Anyway, sorry to write a novel on my first post, but you all seem like a pretty knowledgeable group, and I tend to research the crap out of my toys. I'm looking forward to testing the limits of the N800 with you all.

I can only answer one of your questions, but here goes...

Looks like flashing the OS via Mac OS X is no issue. I haven't tried it myself, though. (My desktop PC runs Linux.)

3) Transcend, Kingston, A-Data... pretty much any reputable brand will work. I would advise against SanDisk but only because they don't support high-speed mode which is supported by the custom (and to a lesser extent) official kernels.

OT: Check the Cannon website to see if Cannon have added SDHC support in a firmware update for the D50 - I'm not saying they have, just suggesting it's a possibility.

4) Yes, Nokia - search for the "Offical Case" thread around here somewhere. It has pictures too.

In future when performing "research" I suggest you try using the "Search" tool available on most forums as this will prove very helpful to you.

I did a search for everything before asking. I already stated I have flashed with my Mac before, was just making sure there wasn't any other issues. As for the Official Case, it isn't a hard case. Its just a reinforced leather case. I meant a true hard case, a la the 770's removable cover.

Also, I have a Nikon d50, not a Canon 50D, and unfortunately It appears to have a hardware limitation to SDHC.

And there isn't a thread about the SD cards. There's a few here and there about specific issues, but nothing about what seems to be working the best.

I've been a forum junkie for many many years, as well as currently a forum admin myself, so I know a thing or two about searching before posting (if only I could get my users to do it more, grrr).

That said, thank you for the info on SanDisk. I didn't know they have SDHC issues. Anyway, not trying to pick a fight, I know from lurking here you are one of the most knowledgeable people on here, I just didn't see anything specific to what I was asking when I searched. Its quite possible I missed it though.

Well, that's cool. I didn't know there was a GUI way. I did it the "approved way" when I reflashed the N770 I have now. I'll have to play with that as I messed something up on mine and I'm missing colors and icons in my interface now.

It's worth noting the approved way isn't really any more approved than my GUI, it turns out.

(And the GUI uses the Nokia-provided binary under the covers).
