Hi,
I'm bored of the default Media application which uses the Tracker data to show the album covers. It has never worked as expected on my Jolla phone, and doesn't work better on my Nexus 5.

Is there any player which shows the covers from the file system?

Thanks.

Sure there is: FlowPlayer. Find it on openrepos.net.

Album artwork not showing has been an ongoing issue for many users. I posted endlessly about it in each version of SFOS. In the end I got around it, but I had to take the long road, bite the bullet and retag all of my music collection (some 30GB or more), where by previously, each album folder had a 'folder.jpg' but SFOS wasn't picking up on this, even renaming the .jpg to the name of the album makes no difference and NO, FlowPlayer has the same problem - your music needs to be tagged properly for the album art to display in native media applications i.e. Mediaplayer, FlowPlayer, etc.

Alternatively, there is QuasarMX mediaplayer for SailfishOS, this DOES detect album art when it is in the form of a 'folder.jpg' or 'album-name.jpg - no need for retagging any or all of your music collection, but QuasarMX is not very......sailfishy?, it's more like a desktop application, there is a version to try out and if you like it, you can buy the full version (which I did ages ago and installed just now so I could answer your question conclusively); https://www.meteorasoftworks.com/

Although I have the full version of QuasarMX, I opted to retag (using MP3Tag) my collection, it took a few evenings/hours, but I got there eventually, now no matter what album I load onto my Jolla, the album art is displayed 99% of the time; it's still not perfect with any particular 'media player' used, but at least with FlowPlayer, you get an option for searching missing album art, which works fairly well most of the time.

IF you choose to retag, here's a link directly to the download page; http://www.mp3tag.de/en/download.html

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Sure it can help @markkyboy. All my music library is encoded with AAC. I use the Nero encoder to do so. I didn't take so much time with the tag feature to add the cover, I did some very simple testing and it doesn't seem to work.

I wonder if MP3Tag can work with AAC, I'll check this.

For the past few hours, I made some testing with my AAC files and the Media and FlowPlayer applications.

I took an album as an example, and set a 500*500 px cover using the AtomicParsley utility on Linux.

The album doesn't appear within Media app as soon as the cover has been added to the tracks.

FlowPlayer sees this album but doesn't display any image. And weirdly, I can't play anything with FlowPlayer (for this album of any other ones).

Indeed, QuasarMX is the one which gives me the best result, it shows directly the cover.jpg stored on the file system. The only issue, is its GUI is not resolution independant, on the Nexus 5, it's pretty strange.

Thanks a lot @coderus!

Having heard such praises about QuasarMX on this page alone, I gave it a try and installed it. The first impression is, meh. So is the second. I have played with it for about 10 minutes and I am serously considering getting rid of it, like I did with the Jolla's default media player and any other player in Harbour that I tried.

The main reason is that it is just like any other media player: it insists on using tags. I do not care about tags. My music collection comes from many sources and the tags are not always consistent. I am not ready to go and retag my entire collection just to make a random media player happy. Software should be my slave, not the other way around.

Back to Filetug and playing a folder it is. It has its quirks too but it suits my needs better.

About 1.5 years ago, I tried to make an audiobook player for folders that displayed a cover.jpg and displayed the folder/file name – the thing was, just reading the folder contents and durations after setting it to play a big folder was so slow, the app became unresponsive and SFOS asked to close it a bunch of times. Because this was unbearable (and I did not have a clue about how to index folders performantly/in the background, but the app concept required some information about what the complete duration was), the app was discontinued before release. Recently, I ripped out the part of it that worked best (the sleep timer) and released it without the player.

Long story short: I feel your pain.

How big was too big? Or did you mean recursively? (That is never my use case.)
