I just got the N810, using the default media player, I cannot play any media files, including the default bundled video and music, such as the N810.avi. The player just displays a black screen and doesn't do anything. I cannot even hear any internet media streams.

I allocated 128mb to extend the swap, but I doubt this has anything to do with it.

You could try installing Canola and see if that works (it uses a different media backend i believe). But your best bet would be to reflash the device and see if the problem is still there. As this is a new device, reflashing should be relatively painless.

If it's brand new and you got it retail, I'd return it to the store. It certainly ought to play the included media. Although they are carefully chosen to show off the device; the provided player will not play certain MPEG and WMV media, and has trouble keeping up with larger formats.
Everything worked for me out-of-the-box, except that "Skype" was just a "download it now" link that said I had to upgrade the OS. Ditto Gizmo, but that worked.

Hi all,

same problem for me. I received my N810 today. All the included media won't play in the default media player. ( audio , video and inet radio)

But the mplayer i installed then was able to play everything just fine.

Any ideas?

Just to describe the behavior of the default media player: when i select a video file to play, it activates the stop button shows a black screen but do not show any time (length or starttime..)
After using the stop button, the time to the left of the slider jumps to 0:00 even after pressing play again. In "stop mode" it shows the file name in the middle of the black video screen.

By the way... Canola2 beta9 cannot play audio or video or inet radio as well as the default player. Same thing (black screen)

OS2008 Version: 2.2007.51-3

Thanks
Efelon

Update (written with the n810 )
After I killed the mediaplyer-ui and -engine and rebooted it's working now. I rebooted several times befor, therefore don't ask me what helped at the end. Anyway thanks to all people in this forum who help everybody out with problems.

this happened to me once, but it worked after a reboot( not reflash). i removed the battery for a while. it only happened when i played a long 2 hour video.

did you install any applications before using mediaplayer for the first time?

Neero is right, the removing of the battery forces the N8x0 to do a hard reset or something, not just a soft reboot. Im guessing that something or another was corrupted, and killing the processes helped. If the N810 ever gets laggy/slow, I find it very helpful to just yank the battery, wait 20 seconds, and pop it back. I think this clears the memory and stuff, which probably got clogged down with leaks from apps.

Also, you can try to reboot as root from xterm. This seems to work much better than the "Switch Off Now!" option in most cases.
